เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก ชนิดราชวรวิหาร ได้รับพระราชทานนามจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 หมายถึง วัดของพระเจ้าแผ่นดินรัชกาลที่ 5 องค์สถาปนาพระอาราม A royal monastery of the first rank belonging to the Ratchaworawihan class, the temple was named by King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V). The nomenclature “Benchamabophit” means “temple established by the fifth king”.
พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 4 ทรงสถาปนาเป็นพระอารามหลวง และพระราชทานนามว่า “วัดเทวราชกุญชร” แปลว่า “ช้างพระอินทร์” ปัจจุบันกรมศิลปากรจดทะเบียนเป็น โบราณสถานสำคัญ King Mongkut (King Rama IV) designated the temple as a royal monastery and called it “Devarajkunchon”, which means elephant of the Lord Indra.
